Yesterday I had the opportunity to go on the “Devil in the White City” bus tour in Chicago. The tour is based on a book that I have not read about the history of con-man/murderer H.H. Holmes and his murder hotel (called the murder castle). The tour also focused on a lot of history of the Chicago world’s fair or 1893 and how that transformed the city for the better. I was invited to the tour as part of a friend’s birthday celebration and I had a lot of fun. It was hot day that gave way to some cooler weather during the tour.

A re-creation of the statue that greeted people traveling by boat to the World’s Fair (the original was 3 times taller but was destroyed by fire).

One of the man-made lagoons still existing from the world’s fair. This was the spot that the president spoke from and the electric lights for the fair were turned on here as part of an opening ceremony. This is where the term “White City” comes from as the thousands of lights were a spectacle that caused the World’s Fair to gleam. During the fair, there were Venetian gondolas on the lagoon. By the way, the gleaming city and the exhibits from all over the world were a heavy influence on Walt Disney who visited later world’s fairs and heard stories from family members who were at this spot. This influenced the creation of the Magic Kingdom and Epcot.

The building is the last one standing from the World’s Fair. It is now the Museum of Science and Industry.

We also went to the spot of the infamous hotel. You can look up info on the murder castle. It is a rather horrifying story. We visited the exact spot where it used to stand. It is now a post office in one of the roughest neighborhoods of Chicago.

Time for a drink and an amazing dinner at Maggiano’s in Chicago. The chef came to our table to help me with my dietary restrictions and he kept referring to me as “The VIP” – Not sure why that is the term, but I will take it as a compliment! 😉
